Hi there, chetro.

Currently, we have an ongoing investigation about customers being unable to access the sales tax center under the sales tax owed page in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Our engineers are currently working on this to sort it out as quickly as possible. Since they are working on this internally, please know that we cannot provide a turnaround time regarding their efforts.

In line with that, we can use the suggested workaround to get around this current behavior. Thus, we can switch to Automated Sales Tax by referring to this article. It contains complete guidelines and what will happen after switching to this option: Switch to automated sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

In case you are not directed to the page where you can utilize Automatic Sales, kindly copy the following URL and paste it into your browser's address bar: https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/tax/set-up-tax. Next, please follow all of the prompts that appear on your screen to complete the process.

Moreover, to ensure you'll get an update about the resolution status, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Support Team. This way, they can add your company file to the list of affected users and provide this investigation number for easy tracking: INV-94539.

To reach them, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Click the Help button.
  3. In the QuickBooks Assistance chat box, select Talk to a human and or tap the Contact Us button at the bottom.
  4. Then, type in your reason for contacting us in the What can we help you with? Box and click Continue.
  5. From there, choose a way to connect with us; either to Chat with us, get a Callback, or call our support line directly by getting our Phone number.

Additionally, refer to this article for other options when contacting them. You can also scroll down to the bottom to take note of their support schedule and hours: QuickBooks Online Support.

Once resolved, you can manage your tax payments as well as review your sales tax reports. Just go to this article for complete guidelines: Manage sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online.

As we work on this, we sincerely appreciate your patience. If you have any other questions about QuickBooks, I'll leave this thread open.

Has there been a resolution this yet?

November 18, 2023

I am getting the same message.  Our sales tax must be submitted no later than Monday the 20th by 5pm or we incur interest.  Hoping for a fix soon!

I followed all of the steps and still get an error "Another tax agency is already using this name.  Please use a different name.  (code: 'INDIRECTAX.11202").

We only charge tax in the state of Nebraska and our tax agency is Nebraska Department of Revenue which is already set up in my Quickbooks.

Thank you.

What is going on with getting this fixed?

Agreed.  This is annoying.  QB has not resolved the issue yet.

January 2, 2024

Greetings, we continue to experience multiple significant issues with the sales tax center. I have not learned of a workaround for recording and viewing Sales Tax Owed in the Sales Tax Center. However, I have a suggestion for a workaround to calculate sales taxes accurately in the Sales by Customer Detail Report. The system seems to calculate sales tax accurately for Sales Receipts but not for Invoices. When I have used sales receipts instead of invoices, the report has accurate. I have not been able to use the workaround 100% as sales receipts are not compatible with transactions that allow for deposits or partial payments. In those cases, I have had to review each invoiced sale to recalculate the sales taxes separately. It has been thwarting and burdensome.

January 3, 2024

Have you considered trying/trying the Sales Tax Liability Report? There are date filters on the report so you can grab only fully funded tax payments made in the tax period you are filing. This report would ignore partial/deposit transactions, and not report on them until that the invoice is fully paid..

I've been making journal entries for the tax payments. Not as streamlined as I expect from Quickbooks, but it works.

January 5, 2024

Greetings, thank you for your ideas. We will be exploring manual journal entries to log some entries before we hand over our books to the accountant. We are also taking measures outside of Quickbooks as we move forward. All the best to you in 2024.

I have already called twice about this issue.  I have a new ticket

from this morning INV #907404.  I got this created after the guy

wasted 30 mins of my time trying different browsers and the app.

Super frustrating so if this ticket was resolved, I would like to see

what the resolution was and if it fixes my issue.

January 12, 2024

I have called repeatedly and as recently as of this am. Quick books as of 1/4/2024 I was told Quickbooks will not support any classic sales tax , you have to do the automated sales tax update.  They closed the investigation number for 95439 found above.

I did do there auto sales tax conversion along with their representative and the sales tax report or link still continues to be inoperable.  I am having to pull reports from chart of accounts and do journal entries as a work around. My investigaition number is 92855 and supposedly still an active investigation they are working on. With this change you will not be able to select old tax accounts in reciepts, only journal entries.  The sales reciept now have an address drop down to enter zip code and creates new tax chart based off location.

January 13, 2024

I am having the same issue. I called in December and was sent an email and told this would be taken care of and was told that I am "on higher PRIORITY LIST, and this has been raised to the banking engineers to understand why this unexpected behavior is happening. You don't have to worry; we will keep you updated regarding the status and make sure that this will be RESOLVED."

I was given no updates and when I called today I was told that the case was closed. They are re-opening a new case, but I don't have high hopes. Is this considered customer service by Quickbooks?

February 1, 2024

Hello all.

Please check your Sales Tax Center. Mine is populated this morning, no longer reading, "Sorry, an error occurred."

Good luck!

Per another post, I escalated my support case to the Office of the President.

keep this post going...still no resolution to our problems...Quickbooks you have failed us!!!!! Why are you not able to fix this already.  I need my sales tax section to work.  I will never recommend your services EVER!!!!

January 19, 2024

Yes, I agree about not recommending Quickbooks currently. If they can't resolve this most basic functional error, that has reliably worked since I went on this platform in 2016, how can I trust that they will resolve any issue? I've always rated them 10 and have recommended Qbooks at least a dozen times. I won't anymore.

January 30, 2024

No progress, same errors continue.
