"Service Error Encountered" When importing Vendor List

Hello I am trying to import my vendor list (using the template provided by Quickbooks).  On both my desktop app and online (using multiple browsers) I keep getting a "Service Error Encountered" message.  How can this get fixed?  I have read other topics on this from a few years ago and none of that helped.  Unfortunately I have received errors when trying to import my items also so I am wondering if Quickbooks is truly a great option at this point....

Thanks for reaching out, @YeOldeButcher.

The error you are receiving usually occurs if there is an interruption with the import process, such as an unstable internet connection or overcollection of cache files. Before we get started, double-check to make sure that your internet connection is stable.

If your internet connection is stable, try using a private browser or clear the cache from the browser and desktop app.

Here's how:

To open a private/incognito window:

  • Google Chrome:Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

To clear cache from QuickBooks Online Desktop app:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Online Windows app.
  2. Click File.
  3. Choose Clear Cache.
  4. Close the app.
  5. Reboot your computer.
  6. Then, reopen the app.

If you still run into the error message while trying to import, you can use Excel's Find and Replace feature to remove these three special characters: !  * & and try to import the information once again.

That should do the trick. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Take care!

I have the same error and none of the troubleshooting steps have resolved it.

Another option, use the importer tool as a workaround.
