Setting up sales tax, I get the error "Another tax agency is already using this name. Please use a different name." What now?

Hi there, mld.engraving.

 

This error will show up if the name that you're trying to use is already associated with an existing tax agency. You can either add an extra character to the name of the new agency or edit the name of the existing one.

 

Please follow these steps to edit an agency's name:

 

  1. Go to the Sales Tax tab under the Taxes menu.
  2. Click Add/edit tax rates and agencies under the Related Task section. 
  3. Select the tax agency and click Edit.
  4. Change the name and click Save.

Thanks for the reply but I cant get that far.  I dont get a "Sales Tax" tab under the "Taxes" menu.  

 

Basically, I select the "Taxes", it takes me to a screen titled "Let's set you up to collect and track sales tax.  Add sales tax to your invoices and receipts, plus track how much you owe", I click setup sales tax, and it takes me to another screen validating my shop location, I hit "next", it asks 

"Do you need to collect sales tax outside of Alaska?"   I select "No".  It then brings up "Looks like you need to pay sales tax to these government offices in Alaska. We call these your tax agencies.
Your tax agencies - Sales tax - Alaska, Kenai Peninsula Borough".  This is correct.  I hit next and get the error "Another tax agency is already using this name. Please use a different name."
 
It acts like I already have setup Sales Tax, but doesn't show any option for sales tax under the Taxes menu.

Allow me to join in this thread and help you set up your sales tax successfully.

 

Let's log in your account and set up your sales tax in a new incognito or private browser. This way, we can identify if it's not a browser error.

 

If you were able to set up your sales tax successfully, I suggest clearing your browser's cache to optimize it and improve your experience with QuickBooks.

 

If the same error exists, switch to a different browser and set up your sales tax from there.

 

However, if you still got the error after following the above troubleshooting steps, I suggest contacting our Customer Care Team. They can help you investigate this error and help you set up your sales tax with the screen sharing tool they have.

For now, we don't have a specific time frame as to when this will be fixed. Rest assured that this has been worked on with our engineers as quickly as possible.

 

In the meantime, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support Team so you'll be added to the affected user's lists. This way, you'll be notified via your email. You may refer to the steps provided by my colleague above.

At this time, we have an ongoing issue where users are getting "Another tax agency is already using this name. Please use a different name." error. Rest assured our engineers are working hard for a fix.

 

To ensure you'll get an update about the resolution status, I recommend contacting our Customer Care Support. This way, they can add your company to the list of affected users and provide this investigation number for easy tracking: INV-43879.

 

Please follow these steps to reach out:

 

  1. Go to Help at the top.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Enter your concern on the field. QB Assistant will provide link to some answers.
  4. Type "I still need a human", then tick the Get help from a human button.
  5. Click Chat with us to start a conversation. See the attached screenshots below.

Currently, there's an ongoing issue about getting the error "Another tax agency is already using this name. Please use a different name" when setting up sales tax in QuickBooks Online (QBO). To get updates about this, I recommend reaching out to our Customer Care team. They use specific tools to open your account and link it to the investigation. Once done, you'll receive email notifications when this issue is resolved. Here's how:

 

Let me guide you how: 

 

  1. Open your QBO account and go to the Help menu.
  2. From the Assistant tab, enter a brief description of your concern. Example: Getting an error "Another tax agency is already using this name. Please use a different name" when setting up sales tax in QBO.
  3. Then, type Talk to a human.
  4. Select Yes, then Get help from a human.
  5. Choose either Start a Chat or Have us call you.
