Switching from Quickbooks Online to Quickbooks Desktop

A bookkeeping customer of mine is using Online and wants to switch back to Desktop.  We are located in a very rural area of Texas and Internet is sketchy at best.

It is my understanding that the online version is available until the subscription is cancelled...is this accurate information?

Will Quickbooks support be available to assist with the switchback?

Thank you for your help!

Hi @BTN2021,

Welcome to the Community. I can provide some clarifications about migrating data to the Desktop version of QuickBooks.

Under our export policies, you can transfer data to Excel or a desktop version of QuickBooks up to a year after you cancel. While users using a trial version can export within 90 days after cancellation only. For more details, I recommend checking out this link: What happens to my QuickBooks Online data after I cancel?.

Also, the conversion process to the Desktop version is easy to perform. I can share some steps that'll help you download the migration tool.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to the QuickBooks Online account you want to convert using a supported web browser.  Use your Intuit Account credentials.
  2. Highlight the URL and replace anything after /app/ with exportqbodatatoqbdt.  The URL should say https://cxx.qbo.intuit.com/app/exportqbodatatoqbdtXX  in the URL is a number, (don't edit the number) and select Enter on your keyboard.  Other support task links won't work during this process.
  3. You'll see an Export Overview window. Read the Export Overview, then select Get Started.
  4. Select Download tool to download the QuickBooks Desktop migration tool.
  5. Once you download the tool, launch the tool to install it and select Next.
  6. Accept the terms in the license agreement and select Next,
  7. Choose Complete as the type of setup,  select Next and then Install.
  8. Select Finish.

Once done, please proceed by following the steps under Step 3 on how to prepare the file for export through this page: Export and convert your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop.

Please know that we provide additional assistance with exporting data to QuickBooks Desktop. If you need more help, I suggest contacting our QuickBooks Support Team via chat or callback.

Our customer support is available from 6 AM - 6 PM PT (Monday - Friday) and 6 AM - 6 PM PT (Saturday). You can reach them through these steps:

  2. Go to the Assistant tab.
  3. Click Get help from a human.
  4. Choose Chat with us or Have us call you

You can also check this article for more details about the export limitations, like how your data converts to the Desktop version: Limitations when you convert from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop.

This did not work - my url is https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/homepage and I get a 404 page not found error.  I do have multiple accounts if that is the issue

Did you try to convert data from QBO US version to QBD US version? Try opening the link on your private/incognito browser.

@BTN2021

Support doesn't offer any conversion service. You may follow the instruction as explained by AlcaeusF to convert data from QB Online to QB Desktop. You may utilize the trial license of QBD 2021 Pro to open the file and purchase the one time license of it later. Another option, you can purchase a 3rd party conversion service.

Hi, I want to convert QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop, I cannot see "Get Started" button in https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/exportqbodatatoqbdt

Further I have contacted customer service chat and they said...

"QuickBooks online on the International version there is no direct option to export QBXML file, On QuickBooks online International you can only export data through excel file or PDF"

Can anyone help and guide how to export QBXML file to convert from QBO to QBDT please...

@AJHC

The converter tool only supports QBO US version. If you are using non QBO US version, you have to purchase a 3rd party conversion service to migrate it to QBO US version as the first step.
