Question

T showing up next to Nontaxable Items on my invoices

I just switched over to QuickBooks Online from QuickBooks Desktop. I am having a really hard time with the transition. One big issue I have run into is on my invoices. All of my line items show a T next to them for "taxable" when sent to the customer or viewed in Print Preview. Including the Non-Taxable items.

The item is in QBO as a non-taxable item (I have double checked this) and the Tax Box does not have a green check mark in it. In addition, tax has not been charged for that line item. However, when I go to send the invoice to the customer, every line item shows a T next to it. Please see attached screenshots.

Even though the tax is not being charged, I do not want a T to show up next to non-taxable items because that will confuse my customers. I need to figure this out and get this fixed as soon as possible.

Thank you!!

Hello, @tkatke.

I'll go over some troubleshooting steps to help you get around this issue with the nontaxable items showing up as taxable when previewing invoices.

In QuickBooks, if you are using sales tax, the program will usually mark the taxable items with a T right after the amount for the line. This indicates that the customer item is subjected to tax.

Since you've already ensured that the Tax box is unchecked for non-taxable items, we can try logging in to your QuickBooks Online account in a private browser. Too much historical data from the browser causes discrepancies that affect the view and performance of your QuickBooks.

We can determine if this is a browser-related issue by using either of these keyboard shortcuts to open an incognito window

depending on your browser:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Shift + Ctrl + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + N

If it works, return to your original browser and clear its cache to start fresh. You can also use another supported, up-to-date browser installed to narrow down the results.
