Tag Conversion. We need to "tag" every type of transaction that relates to expenses that are reimbursable under a Grant program. We've tried to convert to custom fields

Starting May 16, 2025, you'll no longer be able to create tags for reporting, adam. Instead, you will have the option to migrate your tags to a custom field for tracking and reporting purposes. Let me offer more information on this matter. 

 

Before anything else, I'd like to ask a few clarifying questions regarding your concern. Specifically, can you share the exact issue or questions you have? Any additional information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

 

Now, after May 15, 2028, viewing tags and generating associated reports in QuickBooks Online (QBO) will be discontinued. Tags will be removed and will disappear from historical transactions. With this update, we’ve added a custom field to most plans, which will be available for certain sales and expense forms. Below is the list of supported forms by plan level:

Moreover, I'd also recommend using the class tracking feature to keep track of your expense transactions that qualify for reimbursement under a grant program. You can do this in QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced.

Erika,

Thanks for the rapid reply. That being said, I know about the feature deprecation and read all of the instructions in advance of my query. So I'll re-word my challenge. 

 

I need to achieve what Tags achieved so that ANY transaction can be labeled and assigned to a group that can then be collected in a report. Of course, what I'm saying is what Tags do but I am purposely not using the term "Tag". My challenge is that I do not know, after reading all of the published materials, what tools to use to do this. It sounds like the tool is a "Custom Field" but when I try to create a Custom Field, that creaton fails. For clarity, I've eliminated platform, OS, and ISP issues by using both MAC and PC, on four separate browsers and two independent networks.

 

When I try to convert tags to Custom Fields, QB tells me I can only do one. Fine, I only need one. When I try to create a Custom Field, it appears to need to be attached to a category. The problem here, going back to my earlier statement, is that the transactions exist in many forms across multiple categories. To alter the category will cause inacuracings in our financial statements.

Migrating or converting tags to custom fields is akin to creating a new custom field that captures the same data your tags used to. This process does not alter financial categories but gives you the flexibility to label and filter transactions for better reporting.
