Unable to export QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop

I am trying to export my QuickBooks Online data and import this data to Quickbooks Desktop Pro and have tried for 3 days each time waiting for over 12 hours but keep on seeing the following error message upon logging back in:

"Sorry, but something went wrong on [time and date] when you requested that a company file be created for downloading.  Please click Start Over to try again."

I have follow all the steps provided by Intuit help articles and try export the data on the 'app.qbo.intuit.com/app/exportqbodatatoqbdt' page once I'm logged in QBO.  Here are the options I selected:

  • All financial data

It says that exporting can take up to 12 hours, but is usually less.  So I wait until the next day to log in and try to download the exported data file but I get the error message that doesn't specify exactly what the problem is and tells me to start over again.

I contacted Intuit chat for support and they told me to call XXX-XXX-XXXX for the department that specializes in data export.  I call in for phone support and their automated message says the waiting time is usually 5-10 mins.  I waited for 16 mins on the phone with the music playing and eventually it goes silent.  I waited for another 2-3 minutes with no one picking up the line so I hung up after.

I need help with this issue.  Text support is unable to help and phone support doesn't even answer the calls.  Has anyone else been able to resolve this problem?

I understand this isn't an easy process for you, @patr1ckl. I'm here to ensure you'll get past this issue to move data easily.

The error message you get when exporting QuickBooks Online data is likely due to a compatibility problem. Make sure to log in to your QBO account using a supported web browser. See this link for more information about it: System requirements for QuickBooks Online, Accountant, Payroll, and QuickBooks Self-Employed.

If the issue persists, I recommend getting in touch with our Customer Support team. This allows our team to investigate further and provide you with the best resolution.

Let me also add this guide for the complete steps in transferring data.

Please know that you can get back to me anytime if you need more assistance with migrating files or if you have othe QuickBooks queries in general. I'll be pleased to provide you with additional guidance. Keep safe and have a good one!

Hello @Mich_S,

I have tried to export the data on supporting browsers (Safari and Chrome) since I was originally using the Brave browser.  However, that did not resolve the problem.

I was able to get through on the phone with your customer support team and they got the data migration support staff online.  I was informed that eventually, Intuit will be discontinuing QB Desktop after 2023.  So I think at this stage it's not worth the time and investment to work with the data migration team to figure out what the problem is if the QB Desktop app will be discontinued.

Our main point of exporting the QBO data and importing it to QBD was to create a company file to import into TurboTax for quicker tax filing.

Thank you for following the suggested solutions, patr1ckl.

We've already provided the things that we can suggest from here. At this point, it's best to contact our phone or chat support again, so they can use more tools to check why you still can't import your data in QB Pro 2021. They're available up to 6 PM PT today.

Free free to reach back out if you have any other questions about converting your file. Take care and have a good one.

@patr1ckl

Which QB Desktop year version do you run on your machine?

I know it has been a couple months since this question was first posted, but I wanted to share a video that walks you through this process and also addresses what to do when you do not receive an email notification that your data is ready.

I hope this video helps others searching this topic!

I have the same problem as the original post and its years later and I have invested a week and a half and still no solutions after making the desktop purchase - Why isn't there better support?  I have wasted so many hours and hours and hours.  Do it again, I have done it 10x or more and no success.

This problem is a software issue/bug that is outside the scope and knowledge of their customer support team.  The issue has to be escalated to their software development team for them to test, debug, and release a fix.  It's been over a year now and I doubt their dev team will be releasing any fix for this.

Such poor customer service!  Called and the connection was static.  Asked them to call back and they did not.  I phoned again and had almost the same problem.  Put on hold forever.

Trying to export from Desktop to On-Line and keep receiving an uploading error.  No one has been able to assist.  Might be time to dump QB (after using it for 2 companies for 20+years) and more to something else!

Hello there, ItalianDream.

I would love to assist you in achieving your goal. However, could you please provide me with more details regarding your concern about the uploading error you've encountered when exporting from QBDT to QBO? It would be helpful if you could attach a screenshot to help me better understand the issue and provide you with an accurate resolution.

I'll wait for your reply, or if you have any other questions, please let us know. We're always here to help. Stay Safe.

When I bought the On-line version I uploaded the files but the file size was slightly smaller than the desktop, and a flag appeared suggesting that tech service should be called (and I got the impression that I would have to pay for it). So this week I figured I'd try again, went to the desktop, selected Upload to QB On-line, and immediately a error message appeared.

We have a teacher for or language school who wants to handle the accounting but she is remote and cannot access our server here, so an on-line version is preferred.  If we cannot get this up and running we'll try a different cloud-based software and see how that works.
