Question

We have several items that are services, like changing a capacitor. We charge for the service and not the part itself. Several items were created as inventory items. In QBO, is there a way to change from Inventory to Non-Inventory?

Hi KoalaCooling,

It's great to see you visiting the QuickBooks Community! I'll be assisting you with your question about changing the item type of your inventory items.

Changing the type of inventory items will no longer be an option once they have been created. Therefore, the best course of action would be to create a new item profile with the correct type. You can then disable your the old items so they won't populate your item list.

Create non-inventory items:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Products and services.
  3. Click the New button.
  4. Select Non-inventory.
  5. Enter the details of the item.
  6. Click Save and close.

Disable the old items:

  1. On the Products and services page, click the down arrow next to Edit on the item that needs to be inactivated.
  2. Choose Make inactive.
  3. Click Yes to confirm.
