Question

Where is the Swipe Card feature QBO

Hi,

There was an update to QBO the week of 9/11/23. After this update, the ability to "Swipe Card" when taking payment on a sales receipt disappeared and we are forced to key in the customers security code, name , address etc. We are charged 3.5% fees for this. What happened to the swipe feature? It is still there when receiving payments for invoices.

Welcome to Community space, @flytint. I recognize the need to use the Swipe Card feature seamlessly as you've been charged for this. I'm here to share some troubleshooting steps to verify what happened.

Bluetooth card readers only connect to compatible devices. Therefore, make sure it is enabled.

Once verified, turn your mobile card reader on/off. Just press and hold the power button on the side of the device until it's green. You can also take out the device from its dock before you switch it.

After that, update QuickBooks GoPayment and the Online mobile app according to your device. For Apple users, launch your App store to select Updates, then proceed to the steps below:

  1. Select Settings, then General.
  2. Tap Software Update

The support website of your device’s manufacturer has steps to help you download and install (OS) updates:

  1. Select Settings, then General.
  2. Tap Software Update.

The instruction below is for Android:

  1. Select Settings, then About device.
  2. Tap Update, then Check for Updates.
  3. Select Install.

To download and install (OS) updates, follow these steps:

  1. Select Settings, then About device.
  2. Tap Update, then Check for Updates.
  3. Select Install.

If the issue persists, take a look at Solution 4: Disconnect and reconnect the card reader from this article: Fix issues with GoPayment and QuickBooks mobile app card reader.

I'm adding some resources below for more tips on taking payments conveniently:

Please keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other concerns about utilizing the swipe card feature, I'll gladly help. Stay safe always.

This issue is for QBO on a desktop using a magstripe credit card slide device. It's not for Quickbooks GoPayment or online mobile app.

Hi there, flytint. I'm here to help you sort things out so you can seamlessly receive payments using the Swipe Card feature in the QuickBooks Online desktop app.

Are you currently signed in to QuickBooks Online using a web browser on your desktop computer? If that's the case, the reason why your desired functionality is missing is likely due to a cache issue. I suggest performing some basic troubleshooting steps to rule this out. Let's start by opening your QuickBooks Online account on a private page or incognito window. This mode won't save any browsing history. Here are the shortcut keys to open it:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Option + P

If this works, then you'll have to go back to your original page and clear your browser cache regularly. This prevents strange behavior on your webpage. Otherwise, use another supported browser for the best experience when using QuickBooks.

On the other hand, if you're using a QuickBooks Online Desktop app, I recommend refreshing the app's data to see the latest available information. An outdated app is possibly the reason for the problem. I'd like to know if you're using the QuickBooks Desktop App powered by Windows. If yes, you may need to reset the app by clicking on the Help menu and then selecting Reset App Data. (See the screenshot below for reference.)

If not, you can always drop a comment to let me know so that I can assist you and guide you on the next steps to take.

For future reference, check out this guide on how you can personalize sales forms in QBO: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you have any other concerns with payments or QuickBooks. I'll be around to help further. Keep safe.

This just happened to us on 3/29. Have been using the card swipe feature for years and all of a sudden its gone. Immensely frustrated. They must know what happened but for some reason won't explain to us.

Hi,

Take a minute and read thru this post from the beginning. It explains the issue we are having with the credit card swiper and QB lack of communication on the removal of features.

OK,

Here's what I learned today with CHAT.

If you are on the New Experience? version of QBO the credit card swipe feature is removed and will not be replaced. We will have to manually input card info with added fees for doing so.

If you are in the Old Experience? the credit card swiper will work. So don't update to the experience.

You can't go back when you do, I am still confused with this because I never updated my experience.

As a suggestion you can backup your company offline, stop your subscription. Then restart it, upload your company info and NOT move to the new experience.

Oh, forgot to mention to backup you need to first upgrade your current subscription in order to back it up.

When migrating last May from desktop, NONE of this information was explained. But apparently it's all in the fine print when the bait and switch happened.

There was a post from an expert in the CHAT referencing INV102181 and 102241 investigations. The are closed. The reason is that since the customer can key in the info it's a workable solution.

This is not the news I wanted but it is the reality.

QBO got our money, wasted our time and caused undo distress without accountability or responsibility with no explanation as to why.

Let me know what alternative software you recommend to try.

I assume this "New Experience"  Is the new layout for Invoices and Estimates.   The thing is I'm not totally sure that we even had a choice as to whether we updated to that or not.  I think it was just gradually rolling out to everyone.  I know my has the new Invoice and Estimates layout options so I'm assuming that mine has been upgraded.    Funning thing is my wife does most of my bookwork and she hates the new layout so she always switches back to the old layout, but apparently just switching the screen layout doesn't change the swipe feature back.

It kinda makes sense that this is exactly what they've done because The "new experience" layout does not apply to the sales receipts layout, only the invoices.  Which is probably why we can still use it on the Receive Payments screen.

The only reason I used Quickbooks Payments was because of the auto syncing of the payments and fees right into QB.  That is a great feature, but now we've lost that feature for sales receipts.  So if I need to switch to another processing service to get the cheaper processing fees I might as well use that same processor for everything else also.

The trouble is in order to let your customers pay invoices online you still need to have QB Payments account.  So they gotchya anyway.  It's just absolutely insane!

So,  Has anyone had the swipe capabilities return to your Sales Receipts?    Last week the "Swipe Card" button reappeared on mine.    I'm not holding my breathe but for now it's back.

Mine works again. It now prompts for country, but other than that it's the same as before. I have only run one test transaction with it. Fingers crossed.
