Question

Why are some eligible accounts for 1099s not showing up in the 1099 preview?

I know of two attorney accounts that meet the criteria for 1099 forms and have been paid in 2023.  One received a 1099 last year.  Both attorneys have the box marked to Track 1099.  Neither is showing up on the preview for 1099s.  What may be missing in QBO?    This is my first time to do 1099s in QBO for this company.

Hello, Mark.

If you pay contractors via cash, check or direct deposit, you'll need to file 1099s with the IRS. QuickBooks Online can help you prepare your 1099s seamlessly, using the information you already have in your account.

The IRS requires you to file a Form 1099-NEC for any non-employee that you:

  • Paid $600 or more in cash during the previous year.
  • Please take note: The IRS doesn't allow certain electronic payments to be reported on Form 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC. These payments include credit card, debit card, gift card, or PayPal payments. QuickBooks Online automatically excludes these for you. The payment companies will report those payments, so you don't have to.
  • Withheld any federal income tax from under the backup withholding rules.

Once you have determined your eligibility for filing 1099, you are now ready to proceed with the filing process and take the necessary steps to complete it successfully.
