Wow! My QB desktop is incredibly slow!

I upgraded my QB desktop from 2016 to 2018 last year because QB was lagging horribly.  Well, the problem has not gotten better, in fact it's worse.   When I was still within our free support period, I called  for help, they couldn't help.  They told me to be sure to update windows often.

I run a small moving company with only 8 employees.  I have about five years of books on this account and my accountant says there is no way my database should be too big.  Any ideas?  It takes me about a full minute to enter one transaction that should take 15secs.  Payroll is a nightmare as well as reconciling my accounts as it takes forever due to the lag.

Thanks for getting in touch with us today, @MMovers,

I appreciate the in-depth information you shared to help us understand the issue better.

There are a few possible reasons for the unexpected behavior or performance issues with QuickBooks Desktop. Here are some:

  • QuickBooks is not updated.
  • Computer does not meet the minimum system requirements.
  • Damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file.
  • Corrupted hard drive.
  • Damaged program files or QuickBooks Desktop installation.
  • Damaged Windows operating system

To get past this hurdle, let's use the QuickBooks Diagnostic Tool to automatically identify and fix .NET Framework, MSXML and C++

issues. Here's how:

  1. Download the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool.
  2. Save the file to your local Desktop.
  3. Close any open programs and run the QBInstall Tool.
  4. Reboot the computer after running the tool to ensure the components are properly updated.

Once done, try opening QuickBooks again and see if it works this time. However, if you're getting the same issue, I'd recommend following the remaining solution in this article: QuickBooks Desktop won't open, has stopped working, or not responding

Please let me know how this goes, @MMovers. I'll be happy to lend you a helping hand whenever you needed me. Have a great day!

Jen D, Thank you!  I ran the diagnostic tool and so far, so good.  I would print the labels, but I'm not sure how.

Finally I can work efficiently!

I have the same problem... but I am running on a Mac Desktop version. Is there a diagnostic tool I can use for Mac? What the trouble shooting steps for Mac?

The Diagnostic Tool can only be used for the Windows version,jbennett411.

For now, we don't have a similar tool for Mac. You can follow these steps to resolve the program's performance issue:

  1. Update QuickBooks Desktop for Mac
  2. Make sure that the system you're using is compatible with the Mac version that you have. See this article for more details. System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

If you're on a multi-user setup for Mac, follow the recommend steps in this article to help with the performance issue:  Troubleshoot multi-user issues for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

Ok I may have a solution...finally!  Well,  in my case anyways.  So every since updating to Desktop Pro 2019 it has been awful and the system hangs up like crazy.  At least 3 reboots every time Im working in it.  So I started thinking the other day that I wonder if since I was storing my company file on a USB if that had anything to do with it.  Well, it had everything to do with it.  Ever since I moved the main file to the computer itself it has been life changing.  I was working off USB since I travel some and just wanted to kept the file mobile.  I also confirmed this with another company I work with.  We bought a brand new PC and Pro 2020.  I put the file on a USB first and it was terrible.  Once I figured out about moving the file to the main PC it reacted the same.  Once I moved the file to the PC itself it was perfect and great again.

Hope this helps.  I was on the phone with QB tech support and no one asked me about where the file was.  They wanted me to rename the old files and reinstall the new software.  This would have been a simple fix for them if they would have asked.  So glad I figured this out.

I'm a single user and I recently had the same problem.  None of the suggested tools worked for me. After many hours of frustration I found that under File/Utilities/Shared Access had been granted. I'm not sure how this was enabled but by removing that access Quickbooks came back up to full speed. Hope this helps someone else.

Removing the multi-users worked! Thank you.

Hi there, @Shelby31

Thanks for taking the time to follow along with the thread and sharing your concerns.

To clarify, have you tried using the QuickBooks Diagnostic Tool mentioned by my colleagues above? If not, let's follow the steps provided by MariaSoledadG. If you have ran the Diagnostic Tool and you're still having issues, do you mind to answer a few questions for me? This way, I can narrow down where the issue comes from and let you know how we can get it resolved.

  1. Are you noticing the lagging in a particular part of QuickBooks? For example, if you go to a certain list or transaction, does it lag more there or when signing into the company file.
  2. Have you gotten any error messages during the lag?
  3. Does QuickBooks lag more when opening the program or signing into your company file?

Any additional details that you can share would be great. That way, I can get a clear understanding of where your issue comes from.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reply and look forward to chatting with you soon. Take care!

@Shelby31

How big is your file size? Are you running a 17 years data file?

June 2, 2022

Just got blackmailed into annual subscription to stay on desktop version.  Results? Desktop Pro 2022 takes forever to load.  I mean to the point I thought my computer froze.   I share concerns of other like MUST have password (single user) but waiting 30 seconds--when it used to be about 2 with my 2019 version--is progress?

Joshua,

I appreciate info and suggestion to run QB diagnostic tool.  It did not work.  The boot up still takes 30 seconds to a minute, whereas my prior version came  up in just a few seconds.  Once up, it's running fine.

Quickbooks Desktop for Mac is now ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.  I have used it forever.  I am officially about to find another software.  You can't get a human.  Every time I open my company file it tells me I need to upgrade and creates a new one.  I have never never been in such a mess.  And the lack of support from a human is beyond absurd for a company your size.  I am so over it!

Thanks for joining in this conversation, @tmorrow. I see where you're coming from.

I appreciate you for trying all the steps shared in this thread. Since you've already updated your QuickBooks, I'd suggest you move the Quickbooks file back to it's previous location when restoring it. That will resolve the issue you're facing right now.

If the issue persists, you have our Customer Care team to take a closer look at the problem and help you fix it. They can also submit a request to investigate it whenever necessary.

Let me know if you have additional concerns about managing your company file. We're always around here to help in any way we can.

If the diagnostics aren't working. It's worth checking where your ".qbw" company file is located and stored.

If you're accessing it on a shared drive over the network, that could be the problem. The file server could have an issue making it run super slow.

You or your tech admin can test this by copying the file onto your computer directly and opening it to see if it still gives you an extremely slow experience.

Hi Dylan22!

Thank you for helping out a fellow Community member! I agree with checking the storage location of the company file and transferring the file to the local drive to achieve better performance.
