Question

ACH Fees

To Whom It may concern:

I do about 10 transaction a month for rent purposes.   The new 1% (max $10) will end up costing me over $1000 per year.  I pay quick books a service fee every month.  Why not increase the service fee and keep the ACH transfers to zero?   Looking online at the complaints this move is generating, I do not see how the "majority" of the community is asking for this "new" service.   I operate a month in advance so waiting 3 to 10 days for a deposit was NOT a hassle for me.  I suspect that is the case for the majority of the community.

Looking at the 3rd party apps to continue free ACH transfer appears to be more of a hassle as it requires yet another account with yet another link to my bank, the customer I am sending the invoice to has to sign up, blah, blah, blah.

I request you to please reconsider this decision.

Hello there, rlmcameron. I appreciate you for bringing your concern to the Community forum.

When processing bank transfers with a maximum of $10 per transaction, QuickBooks will charge 1% for every ACH payment process. That's the reason why you're getting charged for that particular rate. Your idea will need to hear by our payments team. With that, I'd recommend getting in touch with them to validate this feedback. I can see how ACH transfer costs you each year.

Here's how to contact them:

  1. Within your QBO account, go to Help at the upper-right corner.
  2. In the Search tab, click Contact us.
  3. You'll be asked to enter a brief description of your concern.
  4. Click Continue
  5. Select Chat with us , Have us call you, or Call us

You may want to check these articles for additional details:

That has been done.   The information I got from the chat person was that this was "requested" by the community.  Since this was a service you could sign up for at any time, I don't see how the majority of the community "requested" this service be mandatory.

I would like to see who in the “community” suggested this insane price structure! Why is intuit not offering an option? Why would I want to throw away $1,000 per year during a very tough economic cycle? Nuts! Insane!

A fee equal to 1% of the invoiced amount up to $10 per invoice may not sound like a lot, but if you're a preschool, for example, with 75+ invoices a month, Intuit just added $7,500 a year to your operating costs just for using their payment by bank feature. Very uncool Intuit and very unfriendly to small business.  You should be ashamed of yourself. And those responsible for this decision should be fired.  In fact, even your own agents think it was a bad decision.

This feature was announced as a benefit that came with no additional costs.  That was a lie.  I like what we had before and if I wanted payment faster, I always had the choice to pay 1%.  Now we have no choice.  Rather we have thousands of dollars of unnecessary fees on top of our monthly or annual subscription fees, which also have increased quite dramatically over the past several years.  How is this helpful to small businesses, particularly during a pandemic?

By the way, I spoke with 4 different agents today and not one of them knew how to turn the feature off.  This is also a problem for those who can't afford to use the feature any longer.

I was an early adopter of Quickbooks Online and been loyal for 20+ years.  But, now I am exploring other options. I hope other subscribers do as well.  Then, maybe Wall Street Investors will take note and force Intuit's Board to focus more on serving customers rather than taking 1% of everyone else's money.

You have other options to accept ACH payment for free and integrate with QBO. Otherwise, there are many options in the market including the free one to replace your QBO account. Explore them and contact us in private should you need to purchase a conversion service.

I am out as a QB user.  Unless the fee structure reverts, I will be going to another property management solution after this month.  I am not going to spend another $1000 a year to get rent.   Plenty of free solutions and other solutions that provide expense tracking as well as invoicing.  The daycare with the $7500 a year is a better example than mine how ridiculous the fee structure has gotten.  That's in addition to yearly subscription fees.

@rlmcameron

Have you considered these apps to accept ACH payment for free?

Yes.  I mentioned that in the original post.

April 27, 2021

This decision is insane! Our monthly fee went up from 60 to 150 last year. We thought of switching as we have 7 different companies. This insane increase would cost us about $1,000 per month! Since we are in real estate and have no need for immediate availability of funds, quickbooks has lost a loyal fan and customer. Shame on them for trying to spin it ANY OTHER way! Why blame it on customers who need money fast? Why not offer an option in speed AND cost? Shame on you!

I agree.  This was just a "money grab" by intuit which is wrong, but at a time when some businesses are really hurting is definitely not right.  If we wanted our money faster would could have switched ourselves to the "next day service"

I think it is a good that we all contact our state's Attorney General to file a legal complaint... seems like an open and shut class action law suit.

You can find Attorney General here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_attorney_general

I am not one to get on a soap box or speak out on issues, but this is not fair and helps a great big business at the expense of a lot of small businesses.

May 24, 2021

What do we say to the attorney general? What complaint do we file? Bait and switch? Lying about the community requesting this?

May 12, 2021

Thank you for bringing this to Quickbooks' attention everyone. I just started a very small business and my first invoice came into my bank account with an ACH transfer fee I didn't consent to and I immediately went snooping into the issue and landed here. I hope that the Quickbooks team makes it optional like it apparently was before. Because for a small business this is KILLER.

I already pay you every month for the service you provide. Why the heck do you need more money from me? Every other service like Venmo, Paypal, Cash app let me CHOOSE if I want to do the ACH 1% for an instant transfer. Which makes sense.

I chose you because I want to send clients professional invoices, use the tax function, and have a clear profit/loss diagram. Please fix this so I can stay! Your business model should be lifting your clients up financially. Or there is no payoff for us. And that's not how you create loyalty.

May 24, 2021

It was all clearly a crafted ploy to get people used to a service for free, and then "all of the sudden" need to start charging after everyone got used to it. QuickBooks has joined the ranks of the "Free HBO for 3 months" game. I spent 2 hours on chat today with them, only for them to end the chat every time before doing anything or answering any questions. Just leaving! QuickBooks doesn't seem to want any sort of oversight in their chat, and they clearly don't care about us, since they pulled this bait and switch on us with the "limited time" Free ACH use. ACH is free to use! It would sometimes take a week to get my money, but I was fine with it as long as it arrived eventually.

This is the most annoying thing I've ever had to deal with in regard to my company, and as a business owner, I already have a lot of junk to deal with. Some people in this forum here are complaining about it adding an additional $7,500 or more to their companies. QuickBooks is saying the community "asked" for this... mmhmmm People love asking to get charged more for something that everyone else offers for free, after being told it was free to use. Right?

@Tabens

Yes and no. I have yet to find another accounting app accepting ACH payment for free. But you will find some payment processors offering ACH payment for free.

I'd like to echo the feedback that Quickbooks making this change to a fee without informing users has been terrible. We process many invoices with high account values so this has become a significant expense that we are receiving absolutely no incremental value from. This previously was an on-demand feature where users could decide to opt-in. It is completely ridiculous saying the decision to make it mandatory was due to users' requests. People who wanted it could easily have opted in in the past. This feels like nefarious pricing practice. We are now actively reviewing other accounting platforms instead of QBO. Even if we don't fully switch, we will absolutely be stopping our use of QB ACH payments because of this change. Terrible customer service and communication all around on this.

Contact us in private to purchase our conversion service. Afaik, no accounting app offers ACH payments for free any longer. You may still have to use an additional app or service to do so.

I just want to add my support to the sentiment that it sucks we are charged $10 now and it's screwing a lot of businesses up. Feels like a bait and switch to offer it free and then force $10 per transaction on us after we have our workflow down. I'd rather the subscription just cost a bit more also, but I see how QB wants to advertise it at a lower price and get people hooked.  Really sucks though and makes me want to switch off, so I want QB to at least digest our feelings on the matter before I do that.

Try using: https://www.meliopayments.com/

It's a fairly new company with a minimal viable product. Sending payments via ACH is free. They make money if paid via credit card. Checks and ACH are free.
