Question

Add Time/Cost left out of Revenue

I use the Add Time/Costs to import the billable items to my customer's invoice, however I just realized that this results in the items be omitted, or left out, of the sales revenue on the income statement.  In Canada we have to charge GST on top of these expenses and so I need to have the items added to the Sales Revenue.  How can I adjust the Add Time/Cost function to Sales Revenue?

Hey there crosswyred1,

When it comes to helping you troubleshoot issues like these, or to find workarounds that allow you to see exactly the result you're expecting in your books, the more detail you include the better. From your post, it seems to me that you're looking to add billable time to your customer invoices, ensuring that you're able to add the appropriate sales tax to each line as well. This is fairly straightforward using QuickBooks Desktop, but with some more detail, you'll be able to receive the best support to be able to accomplish exactly what you need.

Using the Add Time/Costs feature within an invoice, or choosing to Invoice for Time & Expenses from the homepage are both easy ways to add billable expenses to an Invoice. When you choose the category or item on the Bill that you create and select Billable, the amount you've entered should easily transfer over to an Invoice as is. From there you can apply the correct sales tax code if it's not already been applied. If you've selected an Account rather than an Item, the program isn't designed to transfer that to an Invoice as an Item. You'd want to select an Item so that the account related to it is impacted - a customer cannot be invoiced for an expense account.

I might be missing the mark here and if that's the case I'd encourage you to reply to this thread to expand on what exactly you're trying to do. You're also welcome to Contact Us outside of the Community so that you can share your screen with a QuickBooks support expert in order to get some step-by-step guidance or clarification. It's my goal to help you complete the tasks at hand in the way you expect, and with a little more detail I think that'll be easy to accomplish.

I'll be on standby if you choose to share further detail here. Take care and have a great day!
