Hello carolefoley,

Thanks for joining us here in the QuickBooks Community! It's a great resource to brainstorm with other users and get responses to your questions about working with QuickBooks Online. I want to make sure you get the answers you're looking for with your question about entering credit card expenses and using journal entries.

First I'd like to take a moment to highlight how you can enter a credit card expense without using a journal entry. Using the Expense feature allows you to choose the appropriate payment account and enter the expense accounts/categories so that you don't have to worry about determining which side is the debit and which is the credit. To do this, all you'd have to do is select +New, then Expense to bring up the transaction. Use the Payment account field to choose your credit card, and then use the other fields to fill in other details like date, supplier, and the expense accounts needed. Here's an article about expenses in QuickBooks Online: Enter and manage expenses in QuickBooks Online

If you're still keen on using a journal entry for whatever reason, I can point you to the article Create a journal entry in QuickBooks Online which goes over how to create the transaction itself, but as for the accounts and whether they ought to be the debit or credit, I recommend working with an accountant. An accountant has the training to know the ins and outs of journal entries so that you can have confidence they're done correctly.

The My Accountant tab facilitates the option to work with an accountant directly in QuickBooks Online. There, you can use the field available to invite your accountant as a user by email or you can click the Find a pro to help button to see our directory of QuickBooks-certified accountants in your area.

It's possible you may still receive responses from other users of the QuickBooks Community, but it never hurts to have an accountant on your side, so don't hesitate to go that route either.

Don't hesitate if you have further questions. :)
