Hi karen-keithconst,

Welcome to the QuickBooks family! With QuickBooks you can streamline your business with the help of powerful features offered by the program. I'll be happy to share more information about projects and entering opening balances.

In QuickBooks you can enter your opening balance from the Chart of Accounts using the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select New.
  3. Follow the steps to create a new account. Give the account a name, an account type, and a detail type.Add any other details, such as the default tax code, as necessary.
  4. Choose when you want to start tracking your finances. In the Unpaid Balance field, enter the amount in the account, and determine the as of date. Enter today's date if you want to start tracking immediately.
  5. When you're done, select Save and Close.

You can also enter the opening balance from the customer/project by following the steps below:

  1. Click Sales on the left pane.
  2. Select New Customer (upper right) or an existing customer.
  3. Go to the Payments and Billing which is between the Tax info and Attachments tabs, then enter Opening Balance and as of date.
  4. Select Save.
