Question

QBO - I'm trying to run a Customer Balance Summary Report, comparing periods. The "Compare another period" comes up, but no choices for dates. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hello hvickar,

Comparing data between certain periods is useful for many reasons, and I can see why you'd want to use the Compare another period option for the Customer Balance Summary report. I've taken a look at the report myself and can see the issue you're referring to. I can also explain what's happened and how you can move forward with getting a comparison for this report.

There are some reports in QuickBooks Online that give you the opportunity to compare certain periods of data, such as the Profit and Loss report, and a few other key financial reports. For the Customer Balance Summary report, the option to compare to another period isn't actually available, which is why there aren't any other periods to choose from. The fact that the menu Compare another period is displaying is a glitch.

Since this would be a useful feature for you, I recommend sharing feedback about it by following our How do I leave feedback? article. With this, comments are forwarded to the product development team for consideration in future updates, and you can share how this kind of update would benefit you. To keep on top of the updates to the software, check out and bookmark this page: QuickBooks Online Feature and Product Updates.

In the meantime, what you can do to get a comparison is run the report once for each period you'd like to compare and then either print or export the report to see the data side by side. If you export to Excel, you can even see about combining the data into a single file to work with the information and present it to whoever may need to see it. The community article Run reports in QuickBooks Online goes over how to run, print, and export reports from the program. If you'd like to check out Excel's capabilities, I recommend consulting the Microsoft website or support team.
