Question

Should I enter the taxes when I am entering Journal transactions for expenses that I (owner) paid for with my own account and want to be reimbursed?

Hello Bestkind,

This is a great question. While it's typically best to keep personal and business funds separate, at QuickBooks, we know there are various reasons that they might mix, such as your situation with paying for an expense that you want to be repaid for. I'll point you in the right direction with determining if and how you should record the sales tax.

It sounds like you've come across the Pay for business expenses with personal funds, which does advise to use a journal entry to record the initial purchase you made. The article doesn't specify what, if anything, to do with the sales tax, so in this situation, I recommend speaking with an accountant. An accountant has the training to know how these kinds of transactions should be recorded to ensure that your remittances are as they should be and your books balance.

The My Accountant tab in QuickBooks Online is designed to help you connect with an accountant. You can invite someone you're already working with as a user to give them access to help you right in your books, or you can use the Find a pro to help button to find a QuickBooks-certified pro near you.

All the best to you!
