Question

I am trying to set up GST under 'Sales tax' as none have populated and then when I press OK it tells me that it already exists yet nothing is there?

I recommend restarting your QuickBooks to solve temporary glitches. It helps refresh the page where you encounter the prompt upon setting up GST. I'll add all the details you need below, Rhett.

First, ensure you're on the right agency and double-check all the details you provided. Then verify the following:

    • Check user permissions- Verify your user role has the necessary permissions to view and modify sales tax settings.
    • Narrow for duplicates - "GST already exists." If you encounter this message, try entering the information with a slightly different name to avoid conflicts.

Lastly, please confirm that the GST is already present in the system:

    • Use the search box at the top of the Sales Tax Center to search for "GST" or "Canada Revenue Agency". This can assist you in finding either the hidden or existing GST setup.

Additionally, an outdated browser cache can cause display issues. Clearing your browser cache and cookies or accessing the private window will be the best option. Here’s how to open it:

    • Google Chrome: Press CTRL + Shift + N.
    • Safari: Press Command + Shift + N.
    • Mozilla Firefox: Press CTRL + Shift + P.

You can also try accessing another supported browser. Sometimes, issues that are specific to a particular browser can be resolved by using a different one.

Check out this article: Delete sales tax rates and agencies in QuickBooks Online. It contains steps on how to rename a tax agency and deactivate a tax rate.

After you've set up a sales tax, I recommend creating a new transaction, such as an invoice or sales receipt, to ensure that GST is selectable. If you have any questions, feel free to tag me in the reply section below.
