Question

When a VAT rate increases in a specific country as it has now in South Africa, and my system is using the Default QBO Tax Rate, is that rate automatically changed by QBO

Also does the recurring invoicing going forward automatically apply the new tax rate or do I need to change anything

When a VAT (Value Added Tax) rate increases in a certain country, QuickBooks Online (QBO) does not automatically update the VAT rate. You need to adjust the VAT rate in your QBO account allowing users more control over their financial configurations to adapt to various tax situations.

This approach prevents potential disruptions and inaccuracies in your financial records, ensuring you can implement rate changes based on their business requirements and timing. To modify tax rates, here's how:

    1. Navigate to VAT. If you have multiple tax agencies, ensure the correct agency is selected at the top-left corner.
    2. Click on the Edit Tax dropdown and select Edit rates.
    3. In the tax rate table, identify and click Edit on the rate you wish to modify. Note: QuickBooks Online default tax rates cannot be edited.
    4. In the Edit tax rate window, adjust the rate and, if desired, rename it.
    5. Set the Effective date when needed, which is when the new rate will come into effect.
    6. Click Save.
    7. To verify your modifications, click Yes.

If you encounter any error while modifying the tax rate, you can check this article for more detailed steps on how to troubleshoot: Edit tax rate in QuickBooks Online.

Furthermore, for recurring invoices, the new VAT rate will not automatically apply to future invoices. You will need to update the VAT rate in the settings of each recurring invoice template to ensure the correct rate is used moving forward.

Moreover, I don’t want to leave you empty-handed here. I’m adding this article to help you learn what list of transaction reports you can access in QBO: Tax Detail Report.
