We made an error on a previously filed GST return.  We reported an incorrect amount of GST collected.  We will request an adjustment through the CRA's My Business Account.  How do we record the refiling and the additional payment to CRA in Quickbooks desktop 2017?

Hey cibcred.

Having the correct information being sent to the CRA to process your sales tax is important. So is making sure it's correctly input into your QuickBooks. Filing sales tax is normally a time-staking process, but QuickBooks makes it fast and easy. I can definitely help you get your GST filing corrected and paid.

The best way to fix the incorrect sales tax filing in QuickBooks is to remove the filing and do it again, instead of adding adjustments or extra payments. This is to make sure that the reason for the misfile is addressed and corrected to ensure everything balances and it doesn't affect any other sales tax filings. The first thing to do is delete the payment that was already made against your GST. This can be done by following these steps.

1. Go to Vendor Center.
2. Select sales tax agency you use.
3. find the payment and double click to open it.
4. Once the payment shows up, click delete at the top.

Once that is done, we can move to the next step, which is deleting the sales tax journal entry. Follow these steps to delete the journal entry.

1. In the chart of accounts, double-click to open the sales tax payable account in question.
2. Find and select the general journal entry created by the system for the return.
3. Go to the Edit menu and choose Delete General Journal or right click and choose Delete General Journal.
4. Read the warning that comes up and click Continue to undo the filing.

As soon as you delete that journal entry, you'll just need to file your sales tax again for the same period by going back to Sales Tax, File Sales Tax.

Have a great one!
