Question

Hi there. I'm looking for support with setting up a new combined tax rate. I need GST/LCT. GST is 5% and LCT is 10%. Can you help with this?

Hello chrissy-m-bouche,

QuickBooks Online makes it easy to set up sales tax rates, even custom ones like what you've mentioned here. I can absolutely work through these steps with you to make sure everything gets set up as you need it to be. Here's how to do it.

To create a rate like this, you'll need the two independant parts of the combined rate and then you'll create a group rate to bring them together. If you already have a province with the 5% GST set up, you can simply use that as the one part, then you'll create the other part. Here's how you can create the LCT rate.

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu.
  2. Choose Manage Sales Tax in the Sales Tax section.
  3. Find the appropriate sales tax agency and choose Add rate.
  4. Enter LCT into the Tax rate box.
  5. Check off I collect this on sales and I pay this on purchases as needed.
  6. Fill out the information related to these fields.
  7. Click Add when done.

Next, let's combine this with the GST rate to make your GST/LCT tax code.

  1. In the Manage sales tax window, choose Add tax at the top.
  2. Click Add next to Group rate.
  3. Give it a Group name.
  4. Choose the GST and LCT tax rates.
  5. Select from the Applicable on box as needed.
  6. Click Add to save.

That's it! It's pretty simple once you know the steps, right? I've got a few article here for you to keep on hand as reference.

That should get you on your way! Let me know if you have more questions. :)
