How do I amend a filed HST return - I've already amended it with CRA and it's been accepted?

We know mistakes sometimes happen so one of the features we made sure to include in QuickBooks Online was the ability to edit entries. I can help go over how to correct an HST sales tax filing.

 

QuickBooks makes filing your sales tax easy by tracking your sales and purchases automatically. Depending on if this was your last sales tax filed or a few months back there are different steps in order to get your sales tax corrected. If this was prior to your last filed sales tax the best way to correct it would be to make an adjustment on your next sales tax filing. You can make an adjustment by following these steps.

 

  1. On the Prepare return page, select the Adjust link on the far right of the line you wish to adjust.
  2. Enter the amount of tax you would like to add to the line (to reduce the line, enter a negative number).
  3. Select your adjustment account. This may be an income account for tax credits, or if your Tax Payable account is correct, you can select the Payable account to adjust the return without affecting your Chart of Accounts.
    Note: We recommend consulting an accounting professional to ensure correctness on this step.
  4. Select Save to save the adjustment.

When you enter a sales tax adjustment, QuickBooks Online automatically adds a general journal entry to show the adjustment. The next time you file your HST the adjustment is included in the File Sales Tax window. QuickBooks Online includes the adjustment on the sales tax line that you chose in the Sales Tax Adjustment window.

 

If this was your last sales tax filing you can contact your accountant to have them remove the filing from your QuickBooks Online account and then recreate it with the correct info. If you don't have an accountant you can find one in your area by going to: My Accountant>Find a pro to help.
