Question

How do I remove HST from my account and invoices? We live in Alberta and do not have HST but I can’t seem to remove it.

Hi simmondscontract.

Having the right sales tax codes for the province you do business in is crucial to keeping your books correct. I'd be happy to help show you how simple it is to make sales tax codes inactive in QuickBooks Online.

In order to make any sales tax code inactive you'd need to go to Taxes>Sales Tax>Manage Sales Tax. From there you just need click make inactive for any sales tax code you don't wish to use or no longer use.

As for changing the sales tax codes for your invoices you'd have to manually change the codes in them. To make it easier to find which invoices have HST on them you can run the Transaction Detail by Tax Code Report. This report allows you to see each invoice that has HST on them and can be found by going to Reports>Sales Tax>Transaction Detail by Tax Code Report.

Be sure to verify they aren't in a closed period or have been reconciled as that can cause issues with your books going forward. If you do run into any that are in a closed or reconciled period I recommend reaching out to your accountant as they're trained on how to do these entries correctly without affecting your books. If you don't have an accountant you can find one in your area by going to My Accountant>Find a pro to help.

If you have any questions let us know and we'd be happy to help.
