Question

How to remove a sales tax province which I accidentally created? We won't ever remit to that province.

Oops. I was trying to create a custom sales tax code (I am used to Quickbooks Desktop) and accidentally created a sales tax province. How to undo and remove the sales tax province which I accidentally created? We won't ever remit to that province. If it cannot be undone, can I choose a setting that says we are not signed up to remit to that province (so that the tax portion of each expense can be added to the expense's account, rather than separated to a separate provincial tax account)? I.e. I would like QBOnline to behave more similarly to the way Quickbooks Desktop adds the non-hst tax portion to the expense (even though on the input/receipt screen, it shows the provincial tax amount in a separate box.)

Hi there,

Mistakes like these are common, but don't worry, I'll be happy to help steer you towards the right path. QuickBooks is a versatile program which enables you to manage your taxes with ease.

In QuickBooks Online, once you create a tax code it cannot be deleted. You'd have to make the tax code inactive and doing this will hide the tax codes from the tax selection menu when creating transactions. Here's how to make a tax code inactive:

  1. Click on Taxes from the left menu
  2. Navigate to Sales Tax at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax)
  3. Click on Manage sales tax
  4. On the Tax agencies tab, locate the tax agency associated with the sales tax rate you wish to make inactive
  5. Select Make inactive in the Actions column next to the rate you wish to make inactive
  6. You'll know the sales tax rate has been deactivated when you see Make active in the Actions column for that sales tax rate.

It's also important to note that sales tax rates created automatically by adding a new province to your file can't be deactivated. If there other features you feel like need to be included in QuickBooks Online, I encourage you to send feedback to our engineers. You can do this by clicking the Gear icon and looking for Feedback.

Let me know if this info helps, I'll be one message away in case you need anything else. Otherwise, enjoy the rest of your week. :)
