Question

I am trying to connect my POS software to Quick books and I am having some issues with taxes. They should be set up as 5% GST and 6% GST but I am seeing HST as well.

Hey there Kathryn,

I love that you're taking advantage of the option to connect third-party apps and software to QuickBooks Online. This is a great way to expand the features and tools that you have at your disposal and makes it even easier to manage your books. It's important that you have the Sales Tax Centre set up correctly, so that the transactions you pull through will have the correct sales tax codes associated with them. Let me help you out with that.

SInce i'm not sure what POS software you're connecting and how your transactions pull through, there may be more options for how this issue can be resolved. If you're importing the invoices you can adjust the sales tax codes in the document prior to importing. If the invoices automatically sync, you'll have to ensure that the settings in the software match up to what's in QuickBooks and that you set up the connection correctly. It might be beneficial to reach out to the support team for the POS software so that they can clarify how the connection works or how their transactions are stored.

In terms of setting up the Sales Tax Centre to meet your needs, I can help you out. Navigate to the Taxes tab and choose Sales tax. Hit Manage sales tax in the upper right and then hit Add tax. Since you're not seeing the correct codes, you'll want to Add the province that you need within Start tracking in a new province. Hit Done when you're finished. You'll notice when you hit Add tax that you also have the option to Add a custom tax and agency as well as to Combine taxes into a group rate

Now when you enter a new transaction, or navigate to an existing transaction, you'll be able to select the appropriate sales tax codes from the dropdown. If your POS software still doesn't pull transactions through with the correct codes selected, I again recommend reaching out to the support team specific to that software.

Let me know if you need further clarification on this or if there's more I can do to support you. Take care and have a great week!
