Question

I just moved to quickbooks. I pay for my last fiscal year GST/HST payable in new fiscal year. How can I record this payment in quickbooks?

Happy New Year, sh2295!

I hope you were able to enjoy some time off before getting back to work this week. As always, I'd be happy to help you with your QuickBooks Online questions, and when it comes to sales tax, the program keep things easy. I'll go over recording sales tax payments in the software.

Since QuickBooks Online handles all sales tax setup, calculations, remittances, and payments or refunds through the Sales Tax module, it's fairly easy to navigate these kinds of situations. Once you've filed your sales tax for a period in the Taxes tab, the program will prompt you to record the payment or refund right away or you can choose to record it later. When you say you'll record it later, it's as easy as going back to the Taxes tab, finding the filing in question, then choosing Record payment (or Record refund when that's the case).

On the page that comes up, you can choose the payment account, payment date, and so forth to make sure that it's being logged correctly in your books, even if the filed period is last year but you're paying it this year. Check out this article to see the steps for filing sales tax and recording payments in QuickBooks Online: File sales tax

Give that a shot and let me know if you have other questions about this process. I want to make sure you're confident moving forward with your sales tax. :)
