Hello emediadesigns-gm,

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community! Setting up sales tax for QuickBooks Online is an easy process, but for those times you do run into trouble like you're describing, my team and I are here to help. I can go over what account number the setup it looking for, working with the setup, and some troubleshooting to get you back on track with the mobile app.

Whether you're setting up sales tax via a browser or on the mobile app, there are a few fields that'll be provided to you to get the job done. Account number is among those options, and in this case, it's referring to the sales tax account number, which would have been given to you by the CRA when you registered to be able to charge sales tax. This is an optional field, so you can even leave if blank if you didn't want to include that information, but including the tax number here will ensure that it automatically appears on your sales forms to customers.

If you're keen on including is as a part of your sales tax setup using the mobile app, one thing you can try is uninstalling and reinstalling the app. This ensures that the app is up to date and free from any cache issues that might be throwing errors when trying to use the application. Once you've reinstalled, simply choose Sign In and then enter your login details again.

If you're still getting errors when setting up your sales tax in the app, I recommend leaving the account number field blank, completing the setup, and then switching to a browser to fill in those details. In a browser, here's how you'd add that sales tax account number.

  1. Select Taxes.
  2. On the Sales Tax page, choose Manage sales tax.
  3. Click Edit agency settings for the sales tax agency in question.
  4. Enter the account number in the given field.
  5. Click Save.

Since logging in using the app and browser use the same login credentials, any changes you make using one login portal should automatically update in the other. Meaning, if you update your sales tax in a browser, the changes should also translate to the app.

I've got a few helpful articles here on setting up and working with sales tax in QuickBooks Online that you're free to check out at your leisure.

Give that a shot and let me know how it goes. I'm here to help if you run into any further trouble.
