Question

I'm in Ontario and just got a bill that shows 8% tax, not the 13% HST. How do I add the Ontario Retail Sales tax of 8% (in addition to the existing HST of 13%) to QB?

Hi there owen2,

Creating and managing sales tax codes and percentages in QuickBooks Online is easy. If you need to create a new sales tax code for whatever reason, here's how you can do it.

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu.
  2. Ensure you're on the Sales Tax tab (if you also have payroll on your account, Payroll Taxes will appear as another tab).
  3. Choose Manage Sales Tax.
  4. Find the correct tax agency (e.g. Canada Revenue Agency).
  5. In the agency's section, select Add rate.
  6. Choose a Tax name.
  7. Choose whether it's paid on sales or purchases.
  8. Click Add.

The new rate will now be available for you to use on your transaction forms. For your reference, here are a few articles about sales tax codes in QuickBooks Online.

I hope that helps! Feel free to ask more questions. :)
