Hello office219,

I'm glad to see that you're keeping up with filing your sales taxes in QuickBooks Online. With the Sales Tax module, you can have the confidence in the calculations produced so you can file with the government. Overpayments sometimes happen, and making sure that you're logging the amount you actually paid is important. I can help you with this.

When you've filed a return, you'll be prompted to either record the payment right then or you can click to record the payment later. To do that, all you need to do is navigate back to the Taxes tab, then select Record payment on the appropriate return. This will bring you to a screen which summarized the amount owed, gives you the chance to choose the payment account, and other such details.

Recording an overpayment is as simple as editing the number in the Payment Amount field. Once you've done that, just click Record payment, and the overpayment will successfully be registered so that you can properly reconcile it later.

Should the government refund you that overpayment at some point, all you need to do is go back to the Taxes tab, find that return again, then click Record refund. This will open up a window where you can again record details like the account the funds are being deposited to and the date so that you can keep your books in line. After that, click the Record refund button on that page and you'll be good to go.
