Question

In sales (products and services) How do you start a new day of sales? do you just keep adding it up for the month in these "products and services" or can you do it daily

Hey stay1,

It's great that you're keeping track of your sales by day. This allows you to gain a lot of insight about how your business is doing, and recording sales daily is a very efficient way to track your income and sales tax. There are several options for daily sales available depending on your specific needs. Any time you record a transaction, you're able to enter a date. When entering a sales transaction (such as an invoice or sales receipt), those sales will be recorded for the date specified so you can see your sales on a specific date. If you don't need to track sales to specific customers, you can use this to your advantage by recording your sales on a daily basis.

If you're interested in seeing a breakdown of all your sales by day, you can get a report showing this in a few simple steps:

  1. Head to Reports on the left then search for Sales by Customer Detail (Sales by Product/Service Detail can also be used).
  2. In the upper-left, select Day next to Group by, specify the Report period then click on Run report to see your sales broken down by day.

I've included simplified instructions to record daily sales in an efficient manner using sales receipts below. I strongly recommend taking a look at this article, as it details how to set up various accounts and items to accurately keep track of your daily sales: Record your total daily sales

Sales Receipts can be saved even if the Customer field is left blank, but selecting a customer unlocks the reporting powers of QuickBooks Online and makes it easier to keep track of transactions. For this reason, the best practice is to create a customer for your daily sales. You can set this up fairly quickly like so:

  1. From the left menu, select Sales, then Customers.
  2. Select New customer.
  3. Enter "Daily Sales" (you can enter a different name if you prefer).
  4. Select Save.

Now when you click on + New then Sales Receipt, you'll be able to record your daily sales under this customer.
