Hi Paramjit,

I'm glad to hear you're using the Sales Tax Centre in QuickBooks Online. It's one of the most robust features in the program that helps you easily track your sales tax and produce precise returns you can always rely on. Having the correct payment applied to your tax returns ensures accuracy across your books. I'll be happy to help you with this.

To edit an instalment payment applied to a wrong tax period, you first need to delete that instalment and then recreate a new one with the correct filing date. Here's how.

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu.
  2. Ensure Sales Tax is shown at the top (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax).
  3. Next to Sales Tax at the top, find the tax agency associated with your return.
  4. On the Payments tab, locate your instalment and select Delete using the drop-down beside View.

It's important to note that if a tax return is already Filed in the system, you won't be able to delete any instalment associated with that return. In that case, you'd need direct assistance with one of our agents to help you undo your return so that you could proceed to delete the desired instalment using the steps above.

Once your instalment is deleted, you are good to go to create a new one in the Payments tab using the New button and selecting the proper Filing date.
