Hi jj25,

Properly setting up your account after migrating from another software is important. The Sales Tax Centre in QuickBooks Online is a robust feature that non only helps you track your sales taxes but also assists you prepare accurate tax returns. I'll be happy to assist you with this.

If you've never filed a tax return in QuickBooks Online, the system may present a previous date range to your attention. However, when preparing your first sales tax return, you have the flexibility to edit both the Start Date and End Date of the return. Here's how.

  1. Go to the Taxes menu.
  2. Ensure Sales Tax is shown at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax)
  3. Next to Sales Tax at the top, find the tax agency associated with your return.
  4. Locate your return on the Filings tab.
  5. Select Prepare return beside the return.
  6. Edit the dates populated in the Start date and End date fields as needed.
  7. Review the lines of the sales tax return, with the balance owing (or refund due) at the bottom
  8. To see individual transactions, select the dollar amount
  9. To make an adjustment to a line on the sales tax return, select Adjust

At this point, you can either exit the return and come back to it later, or Mark as filed to close the tax period. Once you mark the return as filed, QuickBooks will then display the new Start date and End date you've selected.

I hope this helps. And welcome to the family!
