Need to adjust prior HST Quarter to match filed amounts

Hello,

I hope you can help.

When I filed my HST last quarter I didn't realize that it was not marked as filed in QBO.  I have since found and made a few adjustments that appear to have affected this quarter and have adjusted what the Line 114 amount is.  I am trying to prepare my filing for this quarter that just ended, and need this corrected prior to filing.

I have gone through the reports and can't seem to see where things went awry.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi AprBurroughs,

I'm glad to hear you're taking advantage of the Sales Tax Centre in QuickBooks Online to help you produce accurate returns you can always rely on. Making sure everything's properly aligned in your books is important in the running of your business. I'll be happy to guide you with this.

Based on what you've described, it sounds like you may be dealing with exceptions. These are transactions that are dated in a prior tax-reporting period but were entered after the return was filed in QBO for that period. You can view transactions that contribute to exceptions amounts for the current filing by following these steps.

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu
  2. Select Sales Tax at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax)
  3. Next to Sales Tax at the top, find the tax agency associated with the return you'd like to prepare the return for using the drop-down
  4. On the Filings tab, locate the tax you're going to file
  5. In the Action drop-down, select View exception details
  6. This will give you the line by line, transaction by transaction detail for your exceptions.

When it comes to how to adjust or correct transactions in your books, your accountant is the best resource for proper assistance and guidance. For that matter, I strongly encourage you to reach out to an account to have a look at your books and help ensure accuracy in your reports. You can easily invite an accountant to your books or find one in your area. Just head to the My Accountant tab to get started, then select Find a pro to help.
