Hey everyone,

Using Quickbooks Desktop 2021 and trying to figure out how I can get it to remember my tax code on credit card transactions. I use CCs mainly for my business expenses and it'd be nice to just have it know I should always have HST on my charges. I've attached a sample showing the tax column is blank by default. Any help is appreciated!

Hi BrianACS,

Thanks for reaching out here.  Having the option to set a default tax code to your credit card would definitely be a time saver.  QuickBooks Desktop is a powerful program for recording your transactions with confidence and I'll be happy to provide more information so you can get back to what you love!

Although you can't set a default tax code to the credit card you use to pay your bills, you do have the ability to set it for specific products or services and vendors.

Here's how to set a default tax code to an item:

1. From the Lists menu, open Item list

2. Double click the desired item to bring up the Edit item box

3. Use the ▼ dropdown menu to select the Default tax code

4. Hit OK to save.

Repeat the steps for the items you'd like to apply the default tax code to.

Follow these steps to set the default tax code to Vendors:

1. Click on Vendors and then open the Vendor centre

2. Double click the Vendor name

3. Open the Sales Tax Settings and enter the Tax code

4. Click OK when done

For your reference, here's a helpful article for setting up sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any other questions.  We'd be glad to assist!
