Setting up tax codes for Self Assessed PST

I need to be able to account for PST charged to us from Vendors, when it should not have been.  At filing time I take the amounts we in paid in PST and apply for a refund.

I also need to track self assessed PST on sales invoices. Does anyone have a work around or how to set up these tax codes in QBO Canada

Thanks
Nadine

Hello Nadine,

It's great to hear from you again, and I can see how this situation with PST self-assessment would be a bit tricky to figure out in QuickBooks Online. I've got some direction I can give you so you can work through this to track the PST as you need.

When it comes to the default sales tax codes that are set up when you add a new province or territory to track in the Sales Tax module, QuickBooks Online is programmed to recognize how those sales tax codes should track on your transactions based on government regulations. When you have a situation where you need the sales tax to be tracked in a specific way, it often means setting up a custom sales tax code, which you can learn more about here: How to set up a new sales tax code

Custom tax codes give you a bit more freedom in the rates and how they're applied, so this may be an option you can explore. To see if that's the right option for you, or if even that isn't quite meeting what you're looking for, I recommend consulting an accountant. An accountant that knows QuickBooks Online would be particularly great for finding a workaround that addresses your needs with self-assessment.

To work with an accountant right in QuickBooks Online, you can add them as a user via the email invite option on the My Accountant page. If you don't already have an accountant, that's okay. You can use that same page but click the Find a pro to help button to review out list of QuickBooks-certified accountants near you.

You may also hear from others in the QuickBooks Community who are in the same situation, so keep an eye out for replies to this thread as well. :)

I hope you have a great rest of your day.
