Question

Should I use 1) out of scope (0%), 2) zero-rated (0%), 3) Exempt (0%) or HST NB 2016 (15%) when doing entries for payments received on sales receipts?

Hello adesrosiers-jewe,

Welcome to the Community! QuickBooks Online makes it simple to add and use various sales tax codes, allowing you to accurately track your tax liabilities. It can sometimes be tricky to determine which special tax code to use. Don't worry, I can shed some light on this for you.

The sales tax code that you'll use when processing a sales receipt will depend on the type of goods or services being sold. Canada Revenue Agency's website includes detailed explanations of when to use out of scope, zero-rated or exempt tax codes. Out of scope is used when posting entries that are not taxable, like posting a journal entry relating to assets or liabilities. Zero-rated is used when dealing with items that you don't charge sales taxes on, but that you may be eligible to claim input tax credits related to providing these goods, like basic groceries or agricultural products. Exempt is used when you don't charge sales tax and you cannot claim any input tax credits, like childcare services or selling a personal residence. I recommend going to CRA's website for further details on the different tax codes: General Information for GST/HST Registrants

In all other situations, you'll likely use the HST NB tax code. It'd be best to reach out to an accountant if you're still unsure about which tax code is correct to use for this sales receipt. You can invite your accountant to view your QuickBooks Online company through the My Accountant menu. If you're not already working with one, you can use the Find a pro to help option to search for a QuickBooks certified Pro Advisor near you.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if there's anything else I can assist you with!
