I need to remove the EI contributions from an employee as they are deemed non-insurable (family member of owner). How to I refund them or transfer the amounts to their income tax paid? Online chat was no help nor was phone help after several hours.

Thanks for posting here in the QuickBooks Community, @useroffice.dreamsgym.

I want to ensure you're taken care of with your EI contributions in the T4slips. I want you to know that calculated taxes within the program can only be adjusted by our Support Team.

This is because we're unable to edit issued checks within the program. I know you already contacted them, but they are the only ones who can help with T4 adjustments to report the correct amount on the return.

Here's how to contact them:

  1. Go to the (?) Help menu, then select the Search tab.
  2. At the bottom, select Contact us.
  3. Enter the keyword Account Management and Billing in the What can we help you with? box.
  4. On the next screen, scroll down to the Choose a way to connect with us section.
  5. Choose Chat with us to initiate a discussion with a live agent.

In the meantime, here are the steps to change the tax exemptions settings.

If you're using QuickBooks Online Standard payroll:

  1. Select Employees from the left menu
  2. Select the employee you wish to edit
  3. Select the edit icon next to Pay
  4. Select the edit icon next to the section #1
  5. Select Tax exemptions
  6. Check the boxes next to Employment Insurance (EI)
  7. Select Done twice

If you're using QuickBooks Online Advanced payroll:

  1. Select Employees from the left menu
  2. Select the employee you wish to edit
  3. Select Edit
  4. Select the Taxes tab
  5. Change the toggle button next to  Employment Insurance (EI) to OFF
  6. Select Save
