Question

When creating the HST 6.5% Expense Sales Tax Rate I chose "Expense" for Account Type instead of selecting "Non-tracking". How can I fix that?

Hello michel-landfeldt,

It'm happy to see that you've already identified this issue. The sales tax centre uses advanced tracking to make filing your returns easy, and offers powerful customization options so you can adapt it to your specific business. QuickBooks Online is built to help you keep everything balanced, and part of this is limiting changes that can cause negative repercussions retroactively. The default tax expense account linked to your HST 6.5% rate can be renamed as needed, or we can easily make the rate inactive to create it as non-tracking. I can guide you through this.

If you prefer to rename the expense account, it can be done in just a few quick steps:

  1. Head to your Accounting tab and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the tax expense account, then select Edit from the Action drop-down.
  3. Edit the Name as desired, then click Save and close.

Alternatively, we can forego this account entirely by recreating the rate as non-tracking. It's just a couple steps to easily make the expense rate inactive:

  1. From the left menu, select Taxes.
  2. Select Manage sales tax.
  3. From the Tax agencies tab, select Make active or Make inactive beside the tax rate you want to change.
  4. Select Done.

Once that's done, you're all set to create the new non-tracking rate. Keep in mind you'll need to create a new group tax to include it with other rates. Don't hesitate to contact an agent through one of the following channels for real-time assistance.
