Hi liz74,

Comparing reports to make sure that your books make sense is a great practice, and I want to ensure that you're able to sort out what's happening between your sales tax return and the figures on your Income Statement. I'd be happy to help you get started with this.

When you notice that numbers aren't quite lining up on reports, the first thing to do is verify date ranges. If the report you're running isn't for the same period as your sales tax return, the numbers could be different. You can change the dates of reports in two ways: right at the top of the report, then click Run Report or via the Customize button.

Once you're sure the dates are correct, the next best thing to do is review your transactions. You can do this by selecting numbers on your reports to see what transactions make them up or by going through your transactions in some other way. If you're not sure what sort of discrepancies you might be looking for here, I recommend working with an accountant. They'll also be able to tell you if the numbers you're looking at should match.

The My Accountant tab is the perfect tool to work with a professional in your QuickBooks Online account. There, you can invite your accountant as a user to your books or use the Find a pro to help button to research individuals near you who can help.

If you're certain that your transactions are correct, but you're still not sure why the numbers aren't matching when they should, I've got a few cloud-based troubleshooting steps for you. Cache and browser issues can cause display errors in QuickBooks Online, so these are useful steps to ensure that the program is running properly.
