Question

A customer has paid us outstanding vat only but not sure how to process this as I can't create an invoice that shows just vat and nothing else?? Anyone help please?

Let me guide you on how to record the outstanding VAT from your customer, stuart-fleming.

 

We can create a bank deposit to receive the payments and select the VAT code. Then, select Debtors for the Accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO). You can also link this deposit once you create your yearly invoice. See How to link a deposit to an invoice. article for more details.

 

Before doing this step, check with your accountant to make sure the financial statements are correct. Here's how to make a deposit:

  1. Click the New Plus icon.
  2. Select Bank Deposits under Other.
  3. Choose the account where the money comes from.
  4. Select the customer.
  5. In the Account column, choose Debtors.
  6. Provide the description and payment method.
  7. Enter the amount.
  8. Select VAT code in the VAT column. 
  9. Press Save and close.

Hello Community Users, we just wanted to pop in and add some clarification to this thread. If you want to create a transaction (like an invoice) of purely VAT, you can follow the steps below.

 

To enter a VAT only transaction. To do this, click on the + sign and select the transaction type that you need.

One the first transaction, choose the account you want to use. For the rate, enter £1, and for the VAT code, select the 20% Standard code.

On the second line, select the same account. For the rate, enter -£1, and choose an Exempt code.

The total of the invoice will be 0. You can then edit the amount in the VAT box to whatever you need it to be.
