I wanted to verify some additional details with your situation. Are you giving away free product? If so, you can create a sales receipt or invoice at a zero price. Then, add the item(s) given away and use classes to organize your transactions. The cost of the item will be posted to the COGS account, and the zero sales price will show on the sales report.
