Question

Has anyone encountered their Invoice and payment numbers becoming a long mix of letters and numbers?

Let's create a dummy invoice to change the sequence of the invoice number, sw32.

When an invoice or sales form is created, Intuit assigns automatically a transaction number. These numbers help you easily identify transactions. If you prefer to use your own numbering system, you can turn on Custom Transaction Numbers. This lets you customise your invoice and sales numbers.

You can turn on the custom transaction numbers so you can assign a transaction number. To do this, follow the steps below.

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Account and Settings.
  2. Select the Custom transaction numbers checkbox, and then click Save.

Then, create a dummy invoice number with a transaction number. Here's how:

  1. Select + New.
  2. Select Invoice or any forms you require.
  3. Fill in the invoice.
  4. Click on the Invoice no. field on the right and change the number to your preferred number.
  5. Click Save.

Once done, try creating another invoice to check if it is giving you the next sequence number of the first dummy invoice created. If so, you can now delete the dummy invoice that you've created.

For your reference, you can record invoice payment if your customer paid for products and services at the time of the sale.
