Hi there, @richie11-. I'm here, and I'll share some details about putting a retention on invoices using QuickBooks Online (QBO) mobile app.

As of now, you can only create an invoice using the QBO mobile app. To add a retention on your invoices, you'll have to switch and use your QuickBooks Online company on your desktop. If you wish to continue with this, I'll gladly input the process below so you can proceed.

First, you'll need to set up a Retainage account in your COA. Here's how:

  1. Access your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. On the left navigational bar, go to the Accounting tab.
  3. In the Chart of Accounts, click New.
  4. For the Category Type, select Other Current Assets.
  5. For Detail Type, select Retainage.
  6. For the Name, you can enter Retainage Receivable.
  7. When done, hit Save.

You'll then proceed to create a Retainage item. To begin, these are the steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Within the Lists section, select Products and Services.
  3. In the Products and Services window, click the New button.
  4. Enter a name for the item (i.e Retainage).
  5. Under Sales Information, place a check-mark next to I sell this product/Service to my customers.
  6. Select the Retainage Receivable account from the Income Account drop-down.
  7. Once done, click Save.

Withholding retainage from an invoice, here's how:

  1. Click the +New button on the left navigational bar.
  2. Select Invoice, and then choose a customer.
  3. Fill out the remaining fields of the invoice, including the purchased line items.
  4. On the next available line of the invoice, select Retainage from the Product/Service column.
  5. In the Rate column, enter the amount of the retainage as a negative (-) number. A reminder, If your retainage is a percentage, you must calculate this manually.
  6. Click Save and Close.

In addition, here's an article in case you'd like to customise a report in QBO to show specific data: Customise reports in QuickBooks Online.
