Question

How do I show CIS deductions when my invoices are paid and customers have deducted the CIS payment. Can I then retrieve this information to see how much I have paid CIS.

Hi there, @ahplumbing

I'm here to share some information about CIS deduction on your invoices in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

When you start using Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) in QBO, the system will calculate your deductions, track your withheld or suffered amounts, and create the necessary reports for HMRC. With this, once you have a customer that's set up as a CIS contractor, QuickBooks will automatically show the deduction on their invoices.

The first thing we need to do is enable CIS in your QuickBooks Online company.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon then select Account and Settings.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Look for the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) section then tick the Enable CIS feature.
  4. Don't forget to tick the I am a CIS subcontractor checkbox and select your correct CIS rate.

Next thing you need to do is add your contractor.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Sales tab then tick the Customers tab.
  2. Click the New customer button.
  3. Enter the necessary details for your contractor.
  4. Don't forget to tick the Is CIS contractor checkbox.

Lastly, you need to create either an invoice or a sales receipt to record the payment received. Enter the necessary details for this transaction, along with your correct CIS rate. The system will automatically calculate your CIS suffered.
