Question

I'm trying to create a credit note but couldn't find the 'credits' section below the outstanding transactions as per the help page. How do I create a credit note?

Welcome to the Community forum, @-uk-fergusapp-co.

Let me share information with you on creating a credit note in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

If I may ask, have you turned on the credit note feature? If yes, QuickBooks handles the credit for you and apply it automatically to the invoice. To check if it's turned on, here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Account and settings.
  3. In the left menu, click Advanced
  4. Go to the Automation section.

From there, check if the automatically apply credits is turn on.

But if it's turned off, to create a credit note, here's how:

  1. In the left menu, click the + New button.
  2. Select Credit note
  3. Choose a Customer.
  4. Enter the credit note details.
  5. Select Save and close.

Once done, to apply the credit note to an invoice, follow the below steps:

  1. In the left menu, click the + New button.
  2. Choose Receive payment.
  3. Select a Customer.
  4. Go to the Outstanding Transactions section and select the open invoice you want to apply the credit note to.
  5. In the Credits section, choose the credit notes you want to apply.
  6. For the open invoice in the Payment column, enter how much of the credit you want to apply.
  7. Leave the Payment method, Reference no, Deposit to, and Amount received fields blank.
  8. Fill in the other necessary information and ensure that the total is correct after applying the credit note.
  9. Select Save and close.
