Question

If a customer pays an invoice but is short by 40pence, How do I close the invoice as there is no point chasing them for such a small amount?

I have an option on how you can handle the 40-pence short for your customer, @newmanmc-outlook. I'm delighted to outline the detailed steps with you to achieve your tasks.

You can record it as a bad debt and writhe them off. This way, you can close the invoice whenever you're ready. To start, let's create an expense account to personalize your books.

Go as follows:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu and select Chart of accounts
  2. Choose the New button.
  3. In the Account Type, pick Expenses
  4. From the Detail Type, click Bad debts.
  5. Hit Save and close

After that, let's create a non-stock item as a placeholder for the bad debt. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Product and services
  2. Click New, then choose Non-stock
  3. Complete the necessary details, then hit Save and close

Once done, create a credit note and apply it to the invoice so you can close it off. For complete instructions, visit this link: Write off bad debt in QuickBooks Online. Directly go to Steps 4 to 6
