Hello, I will be VAT registered as of August 1st 2021. Do i need to upgrade the software so that it itemises VAT?

Yes, you'd need to switch to one of our Online plans (Simple Start, Essentials, or Plus) - all of which track VAT & allow you to submit this directly to HMRC if you're registered for Making Tax Digital. 

Due to differences in products, it's not possible to migrate directly between QBSE and QBO, but we've got a guide here with the steps to take to make sure you don't lose any data.
