Question

How can I delete or unfile a vat return?

I'm using the flat rate scheme FPS setting and I thought the filing action on QB would create the correct return calculating output VAT at 7.5% of gross sales but it remains at 20% of net sales. I cannot see how to delete/unfile the return anywhere on QB. I will then need to redo it - how do I get it to arrive at the correct sales VAT according to FPS?

Glad to have you here in the Community, @malcolmlowry.

To delete (un-file) a VAT return, you'll have to contact our Customer Support Team. This way, you'll be assisted in unfilling your return and reversing the journal to create a new entry.

Also, the reason why your FRS 7.5% rate calculates most of your income because all of your sales transactions have a 20% standard VAT. To correct this, you'll want to make sure that those transactions that shouldn't be calculated have a zero-rated VAT or No VAT.

To fix this, I'd recommend seeking assistance from a VAT expert or your accountant. This way, they can help you make sure that you submit a VAT return that is acceptable with HMRC.

To contact support, here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. From the What can we help you with? box, enter the VAT amount query.
  4. Click Let's talk.
  5. Choose to Start a chat.

I've added this article that you can check out just in case you want to edit VAT settings, codes, and rates: Set up VAT.
