JonpriL,

OK I've found a way:  There is a VAT detail report in the Standard VAT reports section - simple!  I was originally surprised that there was not one visible since this was always available in Desktop by double clicking the VAT report itself.

I now have a further question about a strange entry that QBO has put into my VAT return apparently without reason.  But I will put that in another post.

You can create it, @communityoil!

Let's pull up your Transaction Detail by Account report and customise the report date base on the period of your VAT return to see the list of your transactions.

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Under For my accountant, select Transaction Detail by Account.
  3. Click Customize.
  4. Below the Report Period menu, select Custom.
  5. Select the date base on your past VAT Returns.
  6. Under the Filter menu, select Distribution Account.
  7. On the Distribution Account, select your VAT account.
  8. Click Run report.

Here's an article you can read to learn more about customising your report: Customise reports in QuickBooks Online.

Lastly, I've got you this helpful article in case you need some ideas about how you can save your customised report: Memorise reports in QuickBooks Online.
