Question

I have just run a report for my last quarter vat return. But on the expenses total, the vat to pay is not showing as exactly 20% of the total expenses figure, Why?

Hi there, pajobrien.

I understand the importance of having an accurate record of your VAT return in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I'm here to share the possible cause why the VAT to pay isn't showing 20% of the total expenses figure.

I appreciate you for sharing the complete details of your concern. You may encounter such an issue if your Flat Rate Scheme (FRS) box is checked. Not to worry, we can fix this by unchecking the option.

  1. In QuickBooks, go to Taxes and select VAT.
  2. Choose the Edit VAT drop-down menu, then Edit Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom, under Other VAT options, and uncheck the Flat Rate Scheme (FRS) box.
  4. Once done, hit Save.

Aside from that, make sure that the transactions have the correct VAT codes. For more details, please see these articles:

After that, run the report and review the details.
